This book is a comprehensive collection and study of traditional Japanese Quilting Stitch patterns.
 
The author maintains that fabric items which are associated with various life stages leave a big imprint on the memory of a Japanese person.  This is particular true for women.  These items would include the ubugi (very first robe made for a baby), child's futon, pillow, soft fabric toys, and for older children, teens, and adults, kimonos, yukatas, aprons, and even utilitarian items such as sewing utensils, furoshiki, school bags, zokin (special wiping cloths), room dividers, kotatsu, and sashiko (utilitarian wear). 
 
A crucially important part of these items is the lovingly rendered quilting stitches which are sewn onto them.  These stitches are not only decorative, but are also intended to impart strength, thickness, or texture to the fabric.
 
The first half of the book is display photography of various items exhibiting traditional stitches, and the balance of the book is both layout patterns for various stitches, as well as detailed study of various traditional items strongly associated them.
