Item Description

Kyoto Machiya

Machiya are row houses characterized by their long, narrow design, central interior garden, private wells, and shrines.

They served as both a home and workplace for their owners, with a shop in the front, and private living spaces behind.  Though their design leans toward efficiency, they tend to have a peacefully elegant atmosphere about them.

While machiya have virtually disappeared from most parts of Japan, they are still evident in certain parts of Kyoto, particularly the very traditional Gion district.

This would be a great reference book if you are interested in traditional Japanese architecture.
